Turda Salt Mine - day trips from Cluj-Napoca

The Turda Salt Mine (Salina Turda) is one of Romania’s most spectacular and unique attractions, drawing visitors from all over the world. Just a short drive from Cluj-Napoca, this vast underground world is both a historical monument and a modern amusement park, carved deep into the salt deposits that have been mined since Roman times.

The mine’s surreal chambers, illuminated by dramatic lighting, create an otherworldly atmosphere, while the clean, salty air is believed to have therapeutic benefits for respiratory health. It’s an ideal destination for families, couples, and anyone interested in history, science, or simply experiencing something truly out of the ordinary.

We visited the Salt Mine in July 2023 and have to say it was one of the most amazing places we have ever been.

Banffy Castle

Things to see

First thing you need to know before starting your day trip: there are actually 2 spots named Banffy Castle. The first castle is located in the Village of Rascruci and was fully renovated until summer of 2024. Formerly the garden of the nobel family Banffy, the castle now hosts several cultural and art events in the region of Cluj and is definetly worth to visit and take a relaxing walk through the gardens. After visiting the first castle, drive another 4 km to find the second one.

The second Banffy Castle, located in the village of Bonțida, is often called the “Versailles of Transylvania.” This baroque palace, surrounded by scenic parkland, is an atmospheric site for history lovers and architecture enthusiasts. Although partially restored, the castle’s romantic ruins and restored sections host art exhibitions, festivals, and the famous Electric Castle music festival each summer. Wander the grounds, learn about the Banffy family’s fascinating history, and enjoy the peaceful rural setting. Banffy Castle is an easy drive from Cluj and can be combined with a visit to the nearby village of Rimetea for a full day of exploration.

The village has won awards for heritage preservation and offers a glimpse into traditional Hungarian culture in Transylvania. Stroll through the peaceful streets, visit the local ethnographic museum, and sample homemade cakes and local delicacies at family-run guesthouses. For the active traveler, Rimetea is a gateway to hiking trails leading up to Piatra Secuiului (the Szekler’s Rock), which rewards climbers with breathtaking views over the valley. Many guided tours from Cluj-Napoca include Rimetea, Turda Gorge, and traditional meals for a truly Romanian rural experience.

I recommend eating lunch at Pensiunea Conacul Secuiesc for traditional Hungarian and Romanian dishes in the village of Coltesti. Here you have an amazing view on the mountains while enjoying homemade sarmale (Romanian cabbage rolls)or papanasi (cheese doughnuts served with jam).
