Is the Steampunk Transylvania Museum in Cluj Worth Visiting?

Cluj-Napoca is full of surprises, but one of the most unexpected attractions in Cluj is a glowing, gear-filled world tucked behind a nondescript door in the city center: the Steampunk Transylvania Museum.

When I first heard about it, I assumed it was a niche spot for cosplay fans — but after stepping inside, I realized it’s easily one of the most unusual and creative things to do in Cluj-Napoca. If you’re a fan of fantasy, design, or simply want something completely different from the usual history museums, this place is going to blow your goggles off 😄.

After visiting this museum with my family in spring 2025, I can honestly say it’s a place worth visiting more than once. The exhibition is constantly changing, and the creative minds behind it manage to make every visit feel unique. If you’ve always wanted to visit a place like this—or you’re just planning to explore some truly special spots in Cluj—keep reading 😊.

What Is the Steampunk Transylvania Museum?

The Steampunk Museum in Cluj (officially known as Steampunk Transylvania) feels more like stepping into a dream straight out of a Jules Verne novel than walking through a traditional museum. As a girly, I absolutely loved reading Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea during my school years, so I immediately felt captivated by the exhibits.

Imagine retro-futuristic rooms filled with glowing vacuum tubes, mechanical wings, spinning gears, and surreal sculptures — each piece handcrafted and beautifully lit. You don’t simply walk past exhibits here; you wander through carefully designed experiences.

Each room tells a loose story: time travel, alternate realities, magical machines, and forgotten inventions. Some displays are interactive (yes, you can push buttons and twist knobs), and everything is steeped in that moody, copper-toned, Jules Verne–meets–Blade Runner atmosphere.

Planning to explore beyond Cluj? I always compare prices first — you can check rental car options here before your trip.

What Can You Experience at the Steampunk Transylvania Museum?

One of the first things I loved about this museum was the friendly guides, who take you through the exhibition step by step. This really sets Steampunk Transylvania apart from many other museums, where you wander alone—or with an audio guide—through the rooms, which can sometimes feel a bit dull.

Devices from the Industrial Era

The journey starts with several hands-on gadgets from the industrial era. These include a wonderfully odd scroll-free “smartphone,” a tobacco-cutting machine, a camera showing a Charlie Chaplin film, a transformed hair dryer, and several other mechanical devices you can try yourself.

Take your time and let the guides demonstrate how everything works—it’s much more fun when you actively interact with the exhibits.

Alchemy Laboratory

One of the coolest experiences here is testing how electricity affects your body. Step onto a podium, place your hands on a large electrified sphere, and let the electricity flow through your cells (don’t worry—it’s completely safe; I tested it myself!). Ask the guides or your friends to take a photo and enjoy a good laugh at your hair standing on end.

You can also watch the guides mix strange potions and perform unusual experiments.

And don’t be shy—try the “laughing machine.” It may look like a torture device at first glance, but trust me, it will surprise you and have you bursting into (possibly hysterical) laughter.

Super Mario and Musical Instruments

After leaving the alchemy area, you’ll soon stumble upon a chance to play video games. And no, there’s no Nintendo or PlayStation here—this is an old-school arcade machine featuring the classic Super Mario Bros. game many of us millennials remember from our childhoods. It’s a piece your kids will absolutely love.

Music lovers will also find something special: a musical instrument you control using hand movements alone. It’s unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere.

Submarine Nautilus and the Underwater Room

Jules Verne fans, pay attention—this is your moment! Here you can dive into the magical world of Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus. Explore the various gadgets inside and climb the ladder to discover a giant octopus lurking above the room.

The underwater room, where you hear the enchanting voices of mermaids, truly makes you feel as if you’ve descended into the dark depths of the sea.

Art Meets Mechanics

Continue upstairs to explore a world where unusual art meets fairy tales and mechanics. Admire an exquisite spider made from old injection tools and listen as the guides tell you the sad story of the fairies said to live in the museum. Be sure to try the electric umbrella and the spinning chair—they’re as strange as they are fun.

The Time Machine

The most impressive invention here is the time machine. But there’s a twist: it’s hidden somewhere in the museum, and you’ll need to solve a riddle before you’re allowed to try it.

If you’re brave enough, take a seat and let the machine transport you to a moment of your choosing in the past. I can guarantee that both you and your kids will be thrilled—and probably want to do it all over again.

Who Will Love This Museum Most?

The short answer? Almost anyone with an imagination. You don´t have to be a steampunk or fantasy fan at all to enjoy this guided journey away from everyday life.

But here’s who I think will appreciate Steampunk Cluj the most:

  • Art lovers and designers — for the craftsmanship and lighting alone
  • Fantasy and sci-fi fans — steampunk fans will obviously feel at home
  • Photographers — the lighting, mirrors, and colors are perfect for Instagram (seriously, bring a camera)
  • Families with school kids or teens — it’s visual, hands-on, and not too long
  • Travelers bored of “just another museum”

That said, it’s not a traditional history museum. If you’re looking for in-depth panels or quiet reading rooms, this isn’t that. But if you want to be surprised, delighted, and maybe even inspired? You’ll absolutely love it just like we did.

You really don´t need to buy your tickets days before your visit. However, you should check their Instagram before your visit to make sure they have no events planned on that day.

How to Get There

The museum is located right in the city center, just a few minutes from Piața Unirii, making it super walkable if you’re staying central.

If you’re coming from the Cluj public transport system, get off at “Piața Mihai Viteazul” or “Memo” — both are 5-7 minutes on foot.

Uber or Bolt will also drop you right outside the door if you’re further out.

Look for the small black sign above a stone building entrance — it’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.

Is It Worth It?

Honestly? Yes — and not just because it’s unique.

For the price of a coffee and a cake, you get to wander a creative world that feels miles away from the usual tourist path. It’s one of those things to do in Cluj-Napoca that stands out not for its size, but for its vibe.

Whether you’re into art, steampunk, or simply love places that make you say, “wait… what is this place?”, it’s worth the hour you’ll spend inside.

And let’s be honest — how often do you get to walk through a museum where every wall glows?
