Mamaia Beach: Complete Guide for First-Time Visitors

Are you thinking of visiting Mamaia Beach in Romania and need help planning? Travelling to a new destination can be quite the challenge, especially if you don´t speak the language of the destination or find only scarce information about Romania. Luckily, I can help you with that! As a Romanian native who has travelled several times to Mamaia Beach and the Romanian seaside, I have gathered all the essential information about Mamaia Beach, which I will share with you in this guide.

But first things first:  Mamaia Beach, stretching along the Black Sea coast just north of Constanța, is Romania’s most celebrated seaside resort, renowned for its fine white sand, lively nightlife, and an impressive array of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options that make it a top choice for both locals and international travelers seeking an amazing and affordable summer holiday.

Mamaia Beach is the right destination for you if you are planning a relaxing family getaway, a party trip with friends, or a romantic escape. This guide covers how to get here, where to stay and things to do in Mamaia, where to eat and how to get around as well as some practical tips if you are visiting for the first time.

Let´s start getting acquainted with this amazing turquoise destination!

Where is Mamaia Beach?

Mamaia Beach is located on a slender, picturesque strip of land between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol, just a few kilometers north of Constanța, which is the largest port on the Black Sea and Romania’s second-largest city.

The resort itself extends for about eight kilometers, with the main boulevard, Bulevardul Mamaia, running the length of the area and connecting all the major hotels, restaurants, and attractions, making navigation easy even for first-time visitors.

Mamaia Nord, or North Mamaia, is the newest and most modern section of the resort, known for its chic beach clubs, luxury hotels, and trendy restaurants that attract a younger, fashionable crowd.

If you’re searching for a Mamaia Beach map, use my ready-to-download map allowing you to easily locate key landmarks such as the Aqua Magic water park, the gondola, and the casino, as well as the main stretches of beach and the bustling nightlife scene.

How to get to Mamaia Beach

Getting to Mamaia Beach is straightforward, thanks to its proximity to major transport hubs and its excellent road connections. The nearest airport is Constanța Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport (CND), which is only about thirteen kilometers from Mamaia and offers seasonal flights from several European cities, making it the most convenient option for international visitors. Unfortunately, the selection of flight connections to Constanta is a bit limited.

The best flights with only 1 stop are currently offered by Turkish Airlines and this has also been our choice when we visited Mamaia.

If you prefer to fly to Bucharest, Romania’s capital, the Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) please note that this is approximately 230 kilometers away.  You can reach Mamaia by car in about two and a half to three and a half hours, depending on traffic, or by train or intercity bus to Constanța, from where a taxi or local bus will take you to the resort in just fifteen minutes.

Insider advice: On Friday afternoons, the expressway to Romania´s seaside is very crowded and there can be long traffic jams. Many locals like to spend the weekend on the beach and use Friday to travel there. This means you should not plan your arrival in Romania on Fridays to avoid overcrowded highways.

Renting a car is a popular and practical choice, especially if you plan to explore the broader Dobrogea region, visit Mamaia Nord, or enjoy day trips along the Black Sea coast. As the roads are modern and well-signposted, most hotels and public areas offer parking, though spaces can be limited during peak season.

My top pick for rental cars is Discover Cars as they have the best prices and variety of cars to choose from with honest reviews.

Another option to get around in Mamaia are taxis and ride-sharing apps like Bolt and Uber, which are affordable and widely available.

Mamaia Beach weather

The weather in Mamaia Beach is one of the best things about this destination. You can expect a classic Black Sea climate that brings hot, sunny summers and mild, breezy evenings-perfect for both daytime relaxation and nighttime fun.

I´ve been to Mamaia Beach 3 times and it was actually always in the summer, as this is when high beach season is Romania. From June to September average daytime temperatures range between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius and the sea water is pleasantly warm at around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for swimming and water sports.

The shoulder seasons of May, early June, and September also offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and often better prices on accommodation, though the water may be a bit cooler and there is a slightly higher chance of rain. I always wanted to visit Mamaia during shoulder season to avoid the crowds and enjoy a quite stroll at the beach – it´s definitely something for my bucket list!

One of the best things about travelling to Mamaia in summer is the best chance of super sunny weather. However, be prepared for some rare showers and pack a light rain jacket and a hat.

What to Do at Mamaia Beach

Mamaia is kind of the Ibiza of Eastern Europe, due to its beautiful beach, which is renowned for its wide, soft, white sand-the only pure white sand beach in Europe. The beach is lined with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a lively array of beach bars, particularly in Mamaia Nord, where the atmosphere is energetic and cosmopolitan. Visitors that want to party and go to festivals should choose this location.

If you are interested in water sports, Mamaia also offers the right things to do water skiing, kitesurfing, and jet skiing on Lake Siutghiol, sailing, paddleboarding, and banana boat rides along the Black Sea.

Families and thrill-seekers alike will enjoy the Aqua Magic water park at the southern entrance of Mamaia, which features slides, pools, and attractions for all ages. For a unique perspective on the resort, the Telegondola (cable car) offers panoramic views as it glides 2.2 kilometers along the length of Mamaia, providing an unforgettable experience at sunset or during the day.

The nightlife in Mamaia is legendary, with an array of clubs and beach parties that draw top international DJs and a fashionable crowd; venues such as Ego Club, Bellagio, Le Gaga, and La Cucaracha are among the most popular, and it is advisable to reserve tables in advance, especially on weekends.

Beyond the beach, visitors can enjoy mini-golf, amusement parks, playgrounds for children, boutique shopping along the main boulevard, and day trips to Constanța’s Old Town, the Roman mosaic, or the Dolphinarium, all of which add cultural and historical depth to your Mamaia holiday.

If you have more than one week in Mamaia, I definitely recommend taking 2 days to visit the Danube Delta and it´s beautiful orchid forest and pelican colonies. See my complete guide on visiting Danube Delta to find out how to get there, where to stay and what to do.

My top pick: Book a boat tour to the water lily reserve in the Danube Delta to spot pelicans, herons, and other wildlife while enjoying the peaceful beauty of this UNESCO-protected paradise for only 23 $ / person. 👉 Book your tour here!

Where to Eat: Best Restaurants in Mamaia

Dining in Mamaia Beach is a real treat for food lovers who want to experience more than the all-inclusive dishes in their hotel. Local restaurants in Mamaia offer fresh Black Sea seafood and Mediterranean cuisine as well as traditional Romanian specialties.

If I had to choose only one restaurant in Mamaia Beach to dine, Blue Acqua Restaurant would be my pick. When we visited Mamaia the last time, we had a great dinner here with fresh fish and Romanian Papanasi (cheese donuts), with a beautiful view on the water and a relaxed atmosphere. What I love about this place is the fact that they have special dishes for children, so you do not have to worry about having to order fries for your kids.

Another renowned restaurant for its fish specialties and sushi is Hanul Cu Peste. This is a quite popular location in summer, so you have to book a table to make sure you can eat there. The restaurant also has a DJ playing on some special evenings and they make amazing cocktails!

Niklos Greek Taverna, located on Mamaia Boulevard, is another coastal gem specializing in exquisite seafood dishes, while Barrels Pub Mamaia is ideal for those seeking international cuisine, burgers, and a casual vibe.

Many beach clubs and hotels have their own restaurants and bars with sea views, and for a romantic dinner, booking a table at sunset on the lakefront is highly recommended.

Prices are generally reasonable by European standards around 8 € – 10 € per main course but can be higher in the most exclusive clubs and restaurants, especially during high season from June to September.

Do you need a rental car in Mamaia?

While a rental car is not strictly necessary if you plan to stay within Mamaia, having your own vehicle can be a significant advantage if you want to explore Mamaia Nord, visit nearby attractions, or take day trips along the Black Sea coast and visit the Danube Delta.

When searching for the best car rental deals in Mamaia, I always recommend using Discover Cars. This platform consistently finds some of the lowest prices available, comparing offers from both international brands and trusted local agencies—sometimes with rates starting as low as €1 per day for mini and economy cars if you book in advance. I recommend picking up your rental car when arriving at Constanta airport, as you generally can choose from a wider range of cars when going with airport pick-up. Don´t forget to rent a car with air conditioning as summers in Romania are hot!

Parking is widely available at most hotels and public lots, though it can be crowded in peak season, so it’s wise to book accommodation with guaranteed parking if you are driving. For those arriving by train or bus, taxis and ride-sharing apps make it easy to get around without the need for a car.

Mamaia Beach Map

Finding your way around Mamaia Beach is simple, as the resort is organized along the central axis of Bulevardul Mamaia, with clear signage for beaches, clubs, hotels, and attractions.

Tourist maps are available at hotel receptions, tourist information points in Constanța, and online, making it easy to locate key landmarks such as Aqua Magic, the casino, the gondola, and the main beach clubs.

The resort is divided into Central Mamaia, Mamaia Nord, and Lakefront, with each area offering its own unique character and attractions. If you are planning to explore beyond the resort, maps of the broader Constanța region are also widely available.

Practical Tips for First-Time Visitors

For first-time visitors to Mamaia Beach, it is helpful to know that English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas, and that the local currency is the Romanian Leu (RON), with credit cards accepted almost everywhere.

Mamaia is a safe destination, but as with any busy tourist spot, it is important to watch your belongings at the beach and in crowded clubs, especially during peak season.

Many hotels and attractions cater specifically to families, with kids’ pools, playgrounds, and entertainment programs, while couples and solo travelers will find plenty of options for relaxation and adventure.

Clubs and high-end restaurants often have dress codes and can be expensive, so it is wise to check in advance and reserve tables for popular venues.

Sunbeds and umbrellas are usually rented by the day, and it is a good idea to bring cash for small purchases at beach bars or markets. The weather can be hot and sunny, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and a light jacket for breezy evenings.

Final thoughts

Mamaia Beach is the perfect European destination for families looking for a hassle-free beach holiday, for couples who love romantic beach walks, seafood and exploring beautiful surroundings like the Danube Delta and for visitors looking for a cool party location and festivals on the beach.

Although Mamaia Beach can get quite crowded in the summer, June until September still remains the best time to visit due to sunshine guarantee, events taking place here and this is also the time when all hotels and restaurants are open. If you need a break from beach life, make sure to rent a car and explore the region of Dobrogea with its ancient roman sites, fortresses and beautiful nature.
