Reasons to visit Cluj
After reading this overview of what Cluj has to offer, I´m sure you will choose Cluj as your next destination in Romania. Maybe you´ll even become a regular visitor.
Walkable and colorful Old Town
If you´re a fan of Baroque or Gothic architecture or just love to stroll around pretty little streets with colorful architecture, you will love the Old Town in Cluj. Start at the Unirii Square and admire the Statue of Matthias Corvinus and the Saint Michael’s Church. Make sure to get inside the church, as the stained-glass windows and quiet interior are really going to take your breath. I also really love visiting churches as it gives me a moment of rest from typical sightseeing.
Nearby streets are lined with restored pastel-colored buildings, cozy cafés, and boutique shops. Make time to visit the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral and the elegant National Opera House — two landmarks that reflect the city’s cultural depth.
👉 Tip: I really recommend taking this 5-star rated walking tour of the Old Town. It will allow you to learn everything there is to know about the city, history and culture and you´ll meet other travelers.

Unique museums
Cluj offers a refreshing take on the museum experience. The city has a total of 20 museums, including history, art and science exhibitions. Some museums belong to the universities in Cluj and have an educational character addressing students.
If you are short on time and only plan to spent 3-4 days in Cluj, then here are the museums I would visit:
Steampunk Transylvania – A one-of-a-kind museum that blends 19th-century aesthetics with fantasy and science fiction. Filled with whimsical, interactive exhibits, it’s a space where imagination meets invention—great for curious minds of all ages. Expect time machines, quirky contraptions, and a truly immersive atmosphere. Try the time machine hidden behind the bookshelf and the electricity experiment. You are welcome to try out the exhibited pieces. School children will love this museum and the friendly guides.
MINA – Museum of Immersive New Art – Europe’s largest immersive art center, MINA Cluj blends digital technology with creativity to deliver interactive exhibitions for all ages. Visitors step into multisensory worlds inspired by artists like Claude Monet, where light, sound, and movement create unforgettable experiences. It’s both educational and entertaining—ideal for families, school groups, and curious travelers alike. Check out if the museum offers a Magic Show during your stay in Cluj, this is perfect for children of any age.
National Museum of Transylvanian History – This museum traces Transylvania’s history from prehistoric times to the early 20th century, featuring archaeological finds, medieval weaponry, rare documents, and period ceramics. Don’t miss the Treasury, showcasing over 4,600 gold and silver items, including ancient coins, ornate jewelry, and Eneolithic idols. Highlights also include an authentic Egyptian mummy, a collection of tile stoves, and rare Oriental weapons.
Ethnographic Park Romulus Vuia – Founded in 1922, this museum showcases over 50,000 objects related to traditional rural life in Transylvania, including folk costumes, tools, ceramics, and textiles. Its open-air section, the Romulus Vuia Park, features historic wooden houses, churches, and workshops set in a scenic outdoor landscape. Children will enjoy exploring the wide open spaces and seeing how people once lived, worked, and traveled in the countryside.
A Growing Food Scene: Where Tradition Meets Brunch Culture

For a quieter rural escape, the animal park “Moara de Vânt” lets children feed animals, ride zip lines, or simply play in hammocks surrounded by nature.
- Adventure beyond the city: Families with older children can enjoy a day trip to Adrenalin Park, where aerial adventure courses, zip lines, baby‑friendly obstacle paths, and organized camps blend physical activity and nature beautifully.
- Ease of use and accessibility: Cluj’s public transport is affordable and reliable. The city’s compact layout means most attractions—parks, museums, shopping centers, and playgrounds—are reachable on foot or by short tram/bus rides. This makes the city especially welcoming to parents navigating with strollers or managing younger children’s routines.
With its blend of playful, cultural, and natural experiences—all easily accessible and safe—Cluj truly delivers a low-stress, high-enjoyment destination for families of all sizes.
