Are the beaches in Romania suited for a holiday?
Romania has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, which are often overlooked. When you think of a beach holiday, you might first think of well-known destinations like Spain or Greece. But I can assure you that Romania, with its 250 km long coast on the Black Sea and the neighboring Danube Delta, has great things to offer. From the lively holiday ressorts in Mamaia Beach or Eforie Nord Beach to the quiet bays of Vama Veche Beach or the lonely Corbu beach, there is something for everyone to discover here.

The Romanian seaside is currently experiencing a tourist boom, but remains pleasantly authentic compared to overcrowded Mediterranean destinations. If you are planning a relaxed holiday, the Black Sea beaches in Romania should definitely be on your shortlist.
Best time to travel to the beaches in Romania
What is the weather like on Romania’s beaches? The ideal time for a beach vacation on the Black Sea in Romania is between June and September. In these months, temperatures reach a pleasant 25-35°C (77-95°F), and the water warms up to 22-25°C (72-77°F).
July and August are the hottest months, which means you will find the most people on the beaches here. If you want to avoid the crowds, I recommend visiting in May-June or September. The weather is still pleasantly warm, but the beaches are less crowded.
In addition, you should also keep an eye on regional events. Many coastal towns host festivals and concerts during the summer, which can add a special touch to your stay. So it’s worth planning your beach holiday in Romania so that you can participate in one of these events.
Getting to the beaches in Romania
The fastest and most convenient way to Romania´s beaches is by plane. Most international flights land at Henri Coandă International Airport in Bucharest. The airlines Lufthansa, KLM and Wizzair offer the best connections to Bucharest with only 1 stop.
My flight booking tip: I use Trip.com to book all my flights. They have the best deals, all airlines and options for flights.
From there, you have the option of continuing your journey by train, bus or rental car, with a rental car being by far the best and most flexible option. The drive from the airport in Bucharest to the coast takes just under 3 hours and is quite easy to drive.
Thanks to the expressway, also known as the “Sunshine Road” in Romania, you can easily and comfortably reach your destination.
Insider advice: On Friday afternoons, the expressway to Romania´s seaside is very crowded and there can be long traffic jams. Many locals like to spend the weekend on the beach and use Friday to travel there. This means you should plan your arrival in Romania in a weekday.
If you want to go directly to Romania’s beaches on the Black Sea, you can also consider flights to Constanta, the closest city to many popular locations such as Mamaia Beach and Vama Veche Beach. The international airport “Mihail Kogalniceanu” in Constanta is only 30 minutes away from the Black Sea coast. Unfortunately, the selection of flight connections to Constanta is a bit limited. The best flights with only 1 stop are currently offered by Turkish Airlines.

What to eat at the beaches in Romania?
The Romanian Black Sea coast is not only known for its beaches, but also for its delicious cuisine. If you are thinking of a beach holiday in Romania, you should definitely discover the culinary delights that this region has to offer. From fresh fish and seafood to traditional Romanian dishes, there is a variety of flavors to spoil your palate.
Fresh Fish and Seafood
A highlight of Romanian coastal food is certainly the fresh fish. The proximity to the Black Sea ensures that you can enjoy a variety of freshly caught fish here. Particularly recommended are the pike-perch fillets and the sea bream, which are often served in the numerous restaurants along the coast. Many of the beach restaurants offer freshly caught dishes directly from the boat – an experience you should not miss!

If you are looking for a slightly more unusual experience, try “Saramură” – a traditional dish where the fish is marinated in a spicy brine and then grilled. The result is a tender and aromatic dish that goes perfectly with a glass of local white wine.
Traditional Romanian dishes
Romanian cuisine is hearty and substantial. On the coast there are many traditional dishes that you should definitely try. A classic is “Mămăligă”, porridge made from corn flour, which is often served as a side dish to meat dishes. You will be surprised how well it goes with grilled meat or a hearty goulash soup.
Another must is “Ciorbă de Pește”, a delicious fish soup prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables. This soup has a slightly sour note, which is created by the use of lemon juice or vinegar – perfect for hot summer days on the beach! If you are interested in local cuisine, be sure to visit one of the many markets in the coastal towns.
Sweets and Snacks
The Romanian cuisine is known for its diverse sweets and snacks, which are also available on the beaches of the Black Sea. From sweet pastries to refreshing ice cream, there is something for every taste. Be sure to try “Plăcinte,” traditional Romanian pastries filled with cheese, potatoes or cabbage. They are often offered warm at the beach stalls and are perfect for a quick snack in between.
For those with a sweet tooth, there are a variety of ice cream parlors and cafes along the coast where you can enjoy delicious ice cream creations and cakes. Especially popular are the Romanian “Clătite,” thin pancakes that are served with various fillings such as chocolate, jam or nuts.
Hidden beaches in Romania
Are you looking for peace and quiet away from the tourist crowds? Then you should discover the hidden beaches and lesser-known places on the Romanian Black Sea coast. Away from the popular resorts, there are true gems that will enchant you with their natural beauty and tranquility.
Gura Portiței – Paradise Between the Sea and the Lake
One of these insider tips is Gura Portiței, a small village located on a narrow strip of land between the Black Sea and Lake Razim. This place is only accessible by boat and offers a unique atmosphere far away from the hustle and bustle of the big resorts. The beach in Gura Portiței is pristine and ideal for long walks and relaxing hours by the sea.
2 Mai – The Quiet Alternative to Vama Veche Beach
If Vama Veche has become too crowded for you, you should visit the neighboring village of 2 Mai. Here things are a bit quieter and more relaxed, but without losing the alternative charm. The beach in 2 Mai is less crowded and offers enough space to relax and unwind.
Corbu Beach – Nature Preserve and Bird Paradise
Another insider tip is Corbu Beach, located north of Constanța. This beach is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and impresses with its unspoiled nature. Here you can observe numerous bird species and enjoy the tranquility of the untouched landscape. Please note that camping is prohibited on Corbu Beach to protect nature.

Local events and festivals on the beaches in Romania
The Romanian seaside is not only known for its beautiful beaches, but also for its vibrant cultural scene. Throughout the summer, numerous events and festivals take place here that will enrich your beach vacation. Whether you are interested in music, film, or traditional Romanian culture, there is something for every taste.
At the beginning of Mai the Sunwaves Festival at Mamaia Beach takes place. This is truly the highlight of the season for fans of electro-musik beyond mainstream taste.
Another music festival which takes place in Juli in Costinesti is Beach! Please. This is the place to be for Hip-Hop fans all around the world.
If you are a fan of arts and crafts, you should not miss the annual art festival in Vama Veche in mid-August. Here, local artists present their work and there are often workshops you can take part in. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the local art scene and maybe even pick up a unique souvenir of your trip.
Do I need a car at the beaches in Romania?
Getting around the Romanian Riviera can be easy if you follow a few useful tips. If you want to be flexible, I recommend renting a car. This way you can easily drive to the various beaches and also explore remote places.
When searching for the best car rental deals at Romanian beaches, I always recommend using Discover Cars.
This platform consistently finds the lowest prices available, comparing offers from both international brands and trusted local agencies—sometimes with rates starting as low as €1 per day for mini and economy cars if you book in advance. I recommend picking up your rental car when arriving at Constanta airport, as you generally can choose from a wider range of cars when going with airport pick-up. Don´t forget to rent a car with air conditioning as summers in Romania are hot!
Get the best deal on rental cars with Discover Cars and book here!
Alternatively, there is also public transportation such as buses and trains that will take you to the larger cities. However, it can be a little difficult to decipher the timetables without knowing Romanian. Please ask your hotel how you can best use public transport.
For short distances, you can use a taxi or services such as Uber or Bolt. These are widespread in the larger beach locations such as Constanta or Mamaia and offer a practical and spontaneous way to get around. You can download the apps on your phone in advance and save the most important addresses.
Where to stay at the beach in Romania? Best hotels and accommodations
Whether you’re looking for a luxury resort or a budget guesthouse, Romania´s seaside has quite a good variety of hotels. When planning your beach holiday in Romania, choosing the right accommodation is essential. The Black Sea coast offers a variety of options that can suit your needs and budget.
To make your decision easier especially if you are traveling the first time to Romania, I put together 2 lists. In the first overview, you will find a list of 10 very good hotels on the Romanian Riviera that offer all-inclusive or half board.

If you are traveling to Romania with your children, the accommodation should meet certain requirements. Firstly, it should have family rooms or apartments with entertainment for the children, but also offer half board or all-inclusive with child-friendly meals. This contributes to a relaxed and successful family vacation.
I have compiled an overview of the family hotels on the Romanian coast that, in my opinion, fulfill the above conditions.

To make it easier for you to decide on accommodation, I would like to introduce some of the accommodations in a little more detail. I have conveniently divided them into 3 categories according to budget.
Luxurious resorts and hotels
If you want to treat yourself to a particularly comfortable stay, there are numerous luxurious resorts and hotels on the Romanian seaside. Mamaia Beach is known for its elegant accommodation, which is often located directly on the beach. The Phoenicia Holiday Resort is an excellent example of this. With its modern amenities, a large pool area and direct access to the beach, it is ideal for families and couples who want to be pampered. Here you can not only relax, but also enjoy various wellness offers.
Another top hotel in Mamaia Beach is the “Iaki Hotel”, which is known for its excellent location and first-class service. The rooms are stylishly furnished and offer a breathtaking view of the Black Sea. There are also several restaurants and bars in the hotel that offer a wide range of culinary delights – perfect for recharging your batteries after a day at the beach.
Mid-range hotels and guesthouses
For travelers on a medium budget, there are many appealing hotels and guesthouses along the coast. In Costinești beach, for example, you will find cozy accommodation such as the “Hotel Regal”, which offers a friendly atmosphere and good value for money. Here you can feel at home in a family environment and enjoy the proximity to the beach at the same time.
Another recommended option is the “Spot” in Vama Veche Beach. This modern accommodation offers comfortable rooms at fair prices and is just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. The garden invites you to relax and the friendly hosts are always ready to give you tips for your stay.
Low-budget accommodation and hostels
If you are looking for a budget-friendly option, there are also many affordable accommodations and hostels along the Romanian beach. In Costinesti beach you will find the “Casa Cinderella”, a popular hostel among young travelers. It offers single and double rooms at affordable prices of €20/night. The lively atmosphere and the opportunity to meet like-minded people make it a perfect place for backpackers and young vacationers.
There are also several budget hotels in Mamaia beach that even offer family rooms such as “Complex Paloma Coral”, which offers simple but clean rooms at attractive prices (around €35/night). This type of accommodation is ideal if you want to spend a lot of time on the beach and are looking for a simple place to stay.
Camping and alternative accommodations
If you are looking for an adventure or just want to get away from the hustle and bustle, you should consider camping or glamping. Many beaches have designated campsites such as „Camping 2 Mai“. Here you can pitch your tent or rent a caravan and experience nature up close.
Travel hacks for a holiday at beach in Romania
Currency and payment in Romania
Although Romania has been a member of the EU since 2007, it does not yet have the euro as its currency. The Romanian currency is the lei (RON). You can withdraw money with credit or EC cards (with Maestro or V-Pay symbol) from designated ATMs (e.g. at the airport) and from Romanian banks. In the major cities and at well-known sights, it is often possible to pay with a credit or debit card.
You should check with your bank before your trip whether your EC card is activated for payment abroad and what fees you can expect to pay for transactions.
Cash continues to play an important role in Romania.
Compared to other European destinations such as Spain or Italy, Romania is a low-budget destination for a beach holiday.
What languages do people speak in Romania?
The official language is Romanian, but many people in tourist areas also speak English or German. A few basic Romanian phrases are much appreciated by locals. Download a translation app on your cell phone so you always have it to hand.
Is Romania a safe country to travel to?
Romania is generally a safe country to travel to. This is also the rating given by the Foreign Office. As in all tourist areas, you should take care of your valuables and take the usual precautions, such as not leaving your wallet unattended on the beach.
Do I need eSIM in Romania?
If you are traveling to Romania from an EU member state, the roaming conditions apply to you when making calls and using the Internet. Since July 1, 2022, not only the same price applies when making calls when traveling within the Union, but also the same conditions as at home. Roaming providers are also obliged to warn their customers of the risk of additional charges.
But beware: roaming does not apply to WLAN calls! Additional charges apply here.
When it comes to data usage, the roaming provider must set a maximum amount for roaming data usage – this can be as little as 50 € or 100 €. This rule serves to protect the customer from additional charges. In plain language, this means that if you have reached the maximum limit for your data volume abroad, data usage will be interrupted by your provider.
If you don’t want to deal with the issue of roaming and additional charges, I recommend buying an eSIM for Romania. An eSIM is a virtual SIM card that you can download to your cell phone via an app and use the phone and internet abroad at the local rate. Perfect for your vacation, right?
Before you buy, make sure that your cell phone is also eSIM-capable, as this is unfortunately not the case with older models.
There are many international providers for eSIM such as Holafly, Ubigi, Saily etc. However, I recommend that you choose a local provider, so you are guaranteed to get the best conditions locally. The eSIM from the Romanian provider Orange offers good value for money and different packages of eSIM. For example, you can get 30 GB data volume and 120 minutes for 29.99 €. Click here for the E-SIM from Orange.
Do I need a health insurance for Romania?
If you are traveling with children, health insurance abroad is a good idea if you want to be prepared for unexpected situations. I recommend the insurance from Envivas, which has consistently scored well in recent years with insurance tests. TravelPlus for trips of up to 60 days costs €34.40 per year as family insurance. Other good offers are available from Ergo and Allianz insurances.
Driving in Romania
If you are driving a rental car in Romania, you should be aware of a few special features.
There is an absolute ban on alcohol in Romania, which is why the blood alcohol limit is 0.0.
On freeways and out of town, you must drive with dipped headlights during the day and all year round.
The following speed limits apply in Romania:
| Inside locations: | 50 km/h |
| Outside locations: | 90 km/h |
| Expressways: | 100 km/h |
| Freeways: | 130 km/h |
